The Budget proposal to reduce Customs duty on LCD panels to 5% will not benefit most buyers since only a limited number of LCD TVs are assembled in the country.

The Customs duty cut on this key input for flat-panel TVs would be applicable only on import of panels that are assembled into LCD TVs here, bringing down prices for screen sizes up to 42” by Rs 500-2,000 for certain brands.

This measure at the most may benefit only the upper middle class as they are the ones who can afford to discard their existing Televisions to buy LCD TVs.

LCD TVs are made in India by Videocon, ONIDA besides the foreign brands such as Sony, LG, Panasonic, Phillips etc.,  largely assemble their products.
