”தென்னாப்பிரிக்கா சென்று வெற்றியுடன் திரும்பி வரும் அருமை அண்ணன் ஐபிஎல் அவர்களே, டிக்கட் வாங்க வழியில்லாததால், நீ இருக்கும் தொலைக்காட்சி நோக்கி வணங்குகிறேன்” என்று வெளிநாடு சென்று திரும்பி வரும் பிரபலத்தை வரவேற்கும் தமிழ் கலாசார பண்புடன் ஐபிஎல் கண்மணிகள் தமிழகமெங்கும் போஸ்டர் ஒட்டியிருக்கிறார்களா என்று தெரியவில்லை.

ஆனால் தென்னாப்பிரிக்கா சென்ற ஐ பி எல் திரும்பி விட்டது. கொண்டாட்டம் துவங்கிவிட்டது. 45 நாட்களுக்கு 100 சதவிகிதம் ஆண்களையும், 33 சதவிகிதம் பெண்களையும், பிறந்த, பிறக்காத குழந்தைகளையும் டி.வி. பெட்டிக்கருகில் கட்டிப்போட்டு இந்த ஃபோர் அண்ட் சிக்சர் தோரண விழாவை வேடிக்கைப் பார்க்க வைக்கப்போகிறது.

சபரிமலைக்கு போல பல ஆண்கள் 45 நாட்களுக்கு மதியம் மூன்று மணிமுதல் இரவு 12 மணிவரை சோஃபா தாண்டா விரதம் இருக்க போகிறார்கள். சீரியல்கள் ஆஃப் ஆகும் அபாயம் இருப்பதால், வீட்டில் டாடா ப்ளஸ்ஸோ, இரண்டு டிவி பெட்டிகளோ இல்லா இல்லம் இல்லாள் இல்லா இல்லம் ஆகக்கூடும் (கலைஞர் தயவில் தமிழ்நாட்டில் இந்த கவலையோ, அதிருஷ்டமோ இருக்காது. இன்னும் தலைப்புக்கு வரவில்லையே என்று நினைப்பவர்கள், இந்த பதிவை டி20 என்றில்லாமல், 50க்கு 50 என்ற எண்ணத்துடன் வாசிக்க யோசிக்கவும். கமல் மொழியில் :கட்சீல வண்டனா” என்று முக்கிய பகுதிக்கு வந்துவிடுவேன்.

புத்தி கொள்முதலால், இந்த முறை நான் எல்லா போட்டிகளையும் பற்றி எழுதுவதில்லை என்று முடிவெடுத்திருக்கிறேன். எனக்கு பிடித்த ஐபிஎல் அணிகள் விளையாடும் போட்டிகளை மட்டும் எழுதலாம் என்று முடிவெடுத்திருக்கிறேன்.

மேட்சுக்குள் நுழைவதற்கு முன்பு, கொஞ்சம் துவக்க விழாவைப் பற்றி பார்க்கலாம்.

ஏராளமான பொருட்செலவில் ஷங்கர் திரைப்படம் போல நடத்தப்பட்ட துவக்கவிழா என்பது தெரிந்தது. ஆனால், இது போன்ற விழாக்களை எப்படி தொலைக்காட்சியில் காட்டவேண்டும் என்பது நிகழ்ச்சியை நேரலையேற்றியவர்களுக்கு நிச்சயம் தெரியவில்லை.

தூரக்காட்சிகளாகவே (Long shots) காட்ட வேண்டிய துவக்க விழா நிகழ்ச்சிகளை ஏதோ அவர்கள் சீரியசான சோகக்காட்சியில் நடிக்கிறர்வகள் போல க்ளோசப்பில் காட்டியது, முதுகிலும், தலையிலும், திடீர் திடீரென்று விளக்கு எரிய ஆண்களும் பெண்களும் மைதானத்தில் ஏன் அலைகிறார்கள் என்ற கேள்வியையே ஏற்படுத்தியது.

அதேபோல், லயனல் ரிச்சி போன்றவர்களின் பாடல்கள் தொலைக்காட்சிக்காக தனி ஒலிவாங்கி வழியே தரப்படாததும் ஏமாற்றம். நேரில் பார்ப்பவர்களைவிட தொலைக்காட்சி மூலம் பார்ப்பவர்கள் அதிகம் என்பதை ஐபிஎல் அமைப்பாளர்கள் உணர்ந்து இனி வரும் துவக்க விழா, நிறைவு விழா நிகழ்ச்சிகளை சிறப்பாக படம்பிடித்து தரும் நிறுவனங்களிடம் தரவேண்டும். இது போன்ற நிகழ்ச்சிகளை ஒளிபரப்பி அனுபவம் கொண்ட சன் டிவி, Zee டிவி போன்றவர்கள் இதை சரிவர படம் பிடிப்பார்கள் தரமாக ஒளிபரப்புவார்கள் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

நிச்சயமாக இப்போது மேட்ச் பற்றித்தான் எழுதப்போகிறேன். வேறு விஷயம் எழுத சரக்கு இல்லை.

மேட்ச் போன வருட சாம்பியன் டெக்கான் சார்ஜருக்கும், போன வருடம் தூங்கிய புலியாக மகா மெகா அடிபட்டு, அடிமட்ட நிலை கண்ட கொல்கத்தா நைட் ரைடர்களுக்கும்.

இதற்கு முந்தைய பந்தயங்களில் மோசமான ஆட்டத்திற்கு காரணங்களை கொல்கத்தா அணியினர் தீவிரமாக ஆராய்ந்து, மாற்றங்களை செய்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்பது திட்டவட்டமாக தெரிந்தது.

1. முதல் மாற்றம் – புக்காnone ஐ மாற்றி “We want the cup, what more?” என்று வாட்மோரை பயிற்சியாளராக கொண்டு வந்தது.

2. பல மேட்சுகளின் தோல்விக்கு காரணமான பவுலர்களின் அக்ரமத்தை அக்ர(ம)த்தால் அடக்கியாள முடிவெடுத்தது.

3. கடவுள் அருளால் ப்ரெண்டன் மேக்மில்லன் இந்த வருடம் ஆஸ்திரேலியர்களுக்கு எதிராக விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருப்பதால் கங்கூலி மறுபடி அணித்தலைவரானது.

4. எத்தனை சொன்னாலும் கேட்காமல் தேங்காய் உடைத்து ரன் தானத்தில் முதல் இடம் பிடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த அகர்கரை முதல் மேட்சுக்கு அகற்றி வைத்தது.

5. அணியின் சொந்தக்காரர் என்கிற ஹோதாவில் ஷாரூக் இது ஏதோ “சக் தே” திரைப்பட ஷூட்டிங் என்று நினைத்துக் கொண்டு மைதானத்தில் வந்து ஆட்டம் போடாமல், வீரர்களுக்கு மென்மையான ”கட்டிப்பிடி வைத்திய” வாய்ப்பு தர ஜூஹி சாவ்லாவை அனுப்பி வைத்தது.

6. எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் மேலாக, கலைஞர் மஞ்சள் துண்டு மகாத்மியம் தெரிந்து கொண்டது போல, அணியின் சீருடை நிறத்தை கருப்பிலிருந்து கருத்த நீலத்துக்கு மாற்றியது. (கம்ப்யூட்டர் கொண்டு பாலுக்கு பால் பதம் பார்த்தாலும், செண்டிமெண்ட் கிரிக்கெட்டில் நிறையவே உண்டு என்பதற்கு இது ஒரு உதாரணம்).

இந்த முறை எல்லா அணிகளிலும், மடிக்கப்பட்டு விட்ட ஐசிஎல்லில் இருந்த சில ஆட்டக்காரர்கள் மன்னிப்புக்கேட்டதால் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டு இருக்கிறார்கள். இதில் ஒருவர் டெக்கானில் அனிருத் சிங்.

தொலைக்காட்சியில் மேட்ச் பார்க்க வந்த வி.ஐ.பி. பார்வையாளர்களில் ”மேற்கிந்திய டெண்டுல்கர்” லாரா (ஐசிஎல்) உட்கார்ந்திருந்தார். யானை வரும் முன்னே வரும் மணியோசையோ என்று தோன்றியது.

இந்த வருட ஐபிஎல் புதுமை டாஸ் போடும்போது ஒரு ”பச்சை தத்துவம்” சொல்லுவார்களாம். இந்த மேட்சில் ரவி சாஸ்த்திரி மாமா சொன்ன ”அடடா” தத்துவம் “வீட்டுக்கொரு மரம் வளருங்கள்”. “ஃப்ளாட்டுக்கொரு மரம் வளருங்கள்” என்று சொல்லியிருந்தால் புதுமையாகவும், புரட்சியாகவும் இருந்திருக்கும்.

புல்லரிக்கும் தத்துவத்துக்கு பின் லலித் மோடி டாஸ் சுண்ட கங்கூலி வால் கேட்க கில்லியாக தலை விழுந்தது. கில்லி கொல்கத்தாவே ஆடிப்பார்க்கட்டும் என்று விட கொல்கத்தா ஆட இறங்கியது.

இந்த வருடம் கொகநைரை நன்றாக ஆடுவார்கள் என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்பில், முதல் பந்திலேயே மண் விழுந்தது. போன ஐபிஎல்லிலும் முதல் ஓவரில், முதல் பந்தில் ஏராளமானவர்கள் அவுட் ஆனார்கள். அதில் முக்கிய பங்கு வகித்தவர் பழைய கொல்கத்தா அணித்தலைவர் மேக்மில்லன் என்பது குறிப்பிடப்பட வேண்டியது. வாஸ் போட்ட முதல் பந்தில் மனோஜ் திவாரி விழுந்தாரென்றால், நான்காவது கங்கூலியும் விழுந்தார். முதல் ஆறு ஓவருக்குள் இன்னும் இரண்டு விக்கெட்டுகள் சரிந்ததில் ”சரிதான், கதை-வசனம் அதேதான் போல இருக்கு” என்று தோன்றியது.

வானிலிருந்து உதவி வந்தால் மட்டுமே இந்த நிலையிலிருந்து கொல்கத்தா மீள முடியும் என்று நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது ஆண்டவன் அனுப்பிய ஏஞ்சலோ என்று வந்தவர் ஏஞ்சலோ மாத்யூஸ். எத்தனையோ முறை இந்தியாவுக்கு எதிராக விளையாடியபோது சீக்கிரம் அவுட்டாகாமல் வெறுப்பேற்றியவர் இன்று விருப்பத்துக்காக விளையாட வேண்டும் என்று ஏங்கினேன். பொய்க்கவில்லை. ஷாவுடன் சேர்ந்து 7வது ஓவர் தொடங்கி எதிரடி கொடுத்து ஆடி 15வது ஓவருக்குபின் சூப்பரடி எடுத்து வைத்ததில், கங்கூலி ”முயன்று பார்க்கலாம்” எனக்கூடிய 161 ரன்கள் கொல்கத்தா எடுத்துவிட்டது.

முயன்று பார்க்கலாம் என்றாலும், டெக்கானின் பேட்டிங் வரிசை பயமுறுத்தும் வரிசை என்பதற்கு மறுப்பு இருக்காது. கில்லி, லஷ்மண், கிப்ஸ், சிமண்ட்ஸ்,ரோஹித் ஷர்மா தாண்டிப்போனால் திருமலைசெட்டி சுமன் என்பது வரை பயமுறுத்தல் அதிகமே. முதல் ஓவர்களில் கொல்கத்தாவுக்கு வெற்றி உண்டா இல்லையா என்பது தீர்மானம் ஆகிவிடும் என்று நினைத்தேன்.

துவக்கத்தில் கில்லி, லஷ்மண் இருவரும் பேட்டின் முனைகளிலேயே விளையாடியது கங்கூலிக்கு இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் உற்சாகம் கொடுத்திருக்க வேண்டும். கொல்கத்தா பவுலர்கள் நன்றாகவே பந்து வீசினார்கள்.

ஆனாலும், கில்லி போன்றவர்களுக்கு இரண்டு முறை கேட்ச் விட்டு வாழ்க்கை கொடுத்தது மன்னிக்க முடியாத குற்றம். லஷ்மண் அவுட்டானாலும், கில்லியும், கிப்ஸும் ஆக்ரோஷமாக ஆடி முதல் 9 ஓவருக்கு பின் ஒரே விக்கெட் மட்டும் இழந்து டெக்கான் வெற்றி நிச்சயத்தில் இருந்தார்கள்.

ஸ்ட்ராடஜி (இந்த வார்த்தைக்கு தமிழ் தேடினேன், டெஸ்ட் மேட்ச் போல நீளமாக இருந்தது, ஆகவே ஆங்கிலத்தை தத்து எடுத்துக் கொண்டேன்) இடைவேளைக்கு பின்னர் திரும்பிய கொல்கத்தாவுக்கு விருப்பமான திருப்பங்களை பெற்றுத்தந்தது கங்கூலியின் பவுலிங் மாற்றங்கள். முரளி கார்த்திக் மிகவும் சிறப்பாக பந்து வீசினார். கங்கூலியின் பவுலிங் மாற்றங்களில் முதலில் கிப்ஸும் பின்னர் சிறப்பாக ஆடிக்கொண்டிருந்த கில்லியும் வெளியேற, முக்கியமான அடித்து ஆடும் கட்டத்தில் இரண்டு புது மட்டையர்கள் நடுவில் சேர்ந்தது டெக்கானுக்கு பின்னடைவை தந்தது. டெக்கான் மட்டையர்கள் தூக்கி அடிக்க முயன்றவை எங்கள் திருவல்லிக்கேணி கிரிக்கெட் மொழியில் “லோக்கல் சிக்ஸர்” ஆகி ஃபீல்டர்கள் கையில் விழுந்தன. கொஞ்சம் வழி கிடைத்ததும் கொல்கத்தா உள்ளே நுழைந்து டெக்கானுக்கு கேட் மூடிவிட்டார்கள்.

இருந்தாலும், கடைசி ஓவர் வரை, இல்லை இல்லை, கடைசி பந்து வரை (இரண்டு நோ பால்கள், ஆறுக்கு இலவச அடிகள் என்ற முறையில்) டெக்கானுக்கு வெற்றி வாய்ப்பு இருந்தது இருபதுக்கு இருபதுக்கே உரித்தானது.

கொல்கத்தா வெற்றியில் களித்தது. அந்த வெற்றியில் நான் களித்தது, கங்கூலியின் எமோஷனலான, உற்சாகமான, காற்றை கையால் குத்தி முஷ்டியை இறுக்கமாக உயர்த்தும் உடல் மொழி. எவ்வளவு நாளாச்சு இதை பார்த்து. கங்கூலி வேட்டைக்காரனாகி “புலி உறுமுது, புலி உறுமுது” என்று பாடுவது போல தோன்றியது.

டாஸ் போடும் போது, “அடுத்த மேட்சுக்கும் நானே கேப்டன்” என்றார் கொல்கத்தா இளவரசர். முழு போட்டிக்கும் அவரே கேப்டனாக இருந்தால் நலம்.

IPL has revolutionized and commercialized the once gentleman now cheer-girlish game of cricket.  As the IPL Season 3 is all set to begin and its commercialization reaches new peaks, I let creative juices ooze from my brain.

One must admit IPL organizers have left out not many areas for commerinnovation.  Still, as someone loving the game of cricket more than loving the pretty cheer-girls, I have come up with some fresh from brain ideas.

It may sound idiotic to some of you, but then I have to remind you that cricket is a game played by 22 idiots watched by several million idiots on the idiot box.

Now, over to my idios, sorry, ideas.

1. Commercial ad breaks whenever a bowler bowls a late outswinger.  “We want to pack every moment of the IPL match enjoyable and productive.  Analysis has shown that many of the fast bowlers bowl late outswingers and there lies a big opportunity for squeezing in few hip swings by the cheer girls and some quick advertisements”

2. Umpires to be given special battery operated LED sticks.  While signaling fours, they will press a button and the LED sticks will show sponsor advertisements.  The advertisements will be stored in a special chip inside these LED sticks and the advertisements will be shown at pre-programmed intervals, giving a good run for their money.

3.  Umpires will also carry with them rolled up advertisement banners.  Whenever the batsman hits a six the umpire will unfurl the banner to display an advertisement while also signaling the six.   This innovation in the game would provide a great opportunity for advertisers to get huge mileage as the advertisement will get during live telecast and when highlights.

If adopted these ideas must be patented by the IPL committee.  That will give an additional opportunity to earn money asking compensation for patent infringement. One must not forget the potential to live telecast the infringement suit trials and the additional revenue arising from selling these live telecast rights to the highest bidders.

4. During match days, a special “I am good for IPL (to be nicknamed IG4IPL)” break can be given.  During this break, players, who offered themselves to be auctioned but not bought by the IPL franchisees can be allowed to bat / bowl two overs in match environment.

As this provides an opportunity for the player to be evaluated by the franchise owners, IG4IPL break can be auctioned to be bought by the wannabe IPL players.  Because of the possibility that the player who does well in IG4IPL can be picked up by a franchise owner at a good price tag, this will be a huge sell out amongst wannabe IPLellers.

To make this product attractive, IPL can consider issuing IG4IPL certificates to the auction winners and make these certificates transferable so that they can sell it at a premium to some other wannabes.  To give little more money for IPL these certificates can carry advertisements!

Later on, IPL can consider opening IPLex which can be a special exchange where IPL teams, players and IG4IPL players can be listed and traded.

When that small step for IPL and a giant leap for Indian mankind is taken, days will not be far when you and I will own 100 Tendulkars!

Month of May was one of the most hectic months for many Indians as the election campaign was at the peak, there was IPL keeping the cricketizens awake till late into the night, the stock markets hotting up where paradoxically many stocks and even the index was freezing!

At the heat of this all, I read this post of N Chokkan, a Tamil writer, on his voting experience.  In his post he was wondering why the big advertisers like the mobile operators etc., had not thought of taking up advertisement space at the voting booths. Surely a very novel idea.  It may me wonder what if we conducted the elections IPL style and named it Indian Political League?  I told the idea to my friend Anand and he came up with the below funny article.

We could have named this Indian Premier League – after all it is a fight for Indian Premiership – but then didn’t want to dare and be sued for copyright infringement suits from the suited, booted Cricket Baron of India Mr. Lalit Modi whom even the politicians fear.

INDIAN POLITICAL LEAGUE 2009 – IPL 2009

Cho Ramswamy, Chief Executive of the IPL convened a press conference today in Chennai to announce the IPL 2009.  According to Cho there will be only eight teams in the IPL 2009:

1. Daredevils led by Mamata Banerjee

2. Royal Challengers led by Lalu Prasad Yadav

3. Super Kings led by Rahul Gandhi

4. Knight Riders led by Amar Singh

5. Trend Setters led by Mayawati

6. Hurricane Hunters led by L.K.Advani

7. Duty Lovers led by Manmohan Singh

8. Regional Roarers by Jayalalitha

Each team will be meeting the other teams twice over a period of four weeks and they are allowed to level charges against each other. A panel of experts will examine all the chargers and allot points.  The panel of experts will comprise of the following eminent personalities:

Somnath Chatterjee, Bal Thackeray, A.B.Vajpayee, Pranoy Roy and MF Hussain.

Cho further added that being the Chief Executive of the IPL he will have a casting point in case there is a tie between two teams.

The IPL 2009 will be conducted as scheduled for four weeks commencing from 16th May 2009 and by 15th June 2009 we will know who the next Prime Minister of India will be. The Prime Minister of India will then be officially announced by Mrs.Pratibha Patil, President of India.

Barrak Obama the President of United States of America felt that the Law and Order situation in the sub-continent is not very conducive for conducting the IPL 2009 in India.  Whilst Cho is very confident that the IPL 2009 can be conducted peacefully in India he has finally agreed to the line of thinking expressed by Obama.

In a dramatic turn of events Cho has surprised the whole world today in the press conference by announcing his decision to host the IPL 2009 in “Mir” the Russian Space Station.  While the decision is well received by the Teams and Indian Public it has nevertheless upset Obama as he expected the matches to be played in the United States of America.

The players of all the teams along with the Panel of Experts will be flown to the space station by “Shuttle” and true to its name it will make a few shuttles between the Space Station and various locations in India to transport the teams.  Cho has decided to use Shuttle to give badly needed cash flow for NASA and to please Obama.

The IPL is being entirely sponsored by Satyam Computers and Cho is very confident that the additional expenses due to change in venue will be borne by the sponsors.  Additional funds are being pumped into Satyam by Tech Mahindra so that the IPL matches can be smoothly held in the space station.

A special arrangement has been made with Sify for all the satelitte TV channels and cable operators to show the matches live.  The Indian public can also cast their votes through the Sify outlets which are well spread across the length and breadth of India.

Cho has made several visits to the Chanchalguda Prison in Hyderabad to discuss the financial aspects of conducting the IPL 2009 with Raju.  It is learnt through reliable sources that Srini was present during all the meetings though he would prefer the media to believe that the meetings were conducted only by Raju.  Cho has also visited Bombay to meet Mr.Anand for the additional funding to be provided by Tech Mahindra.

In a surprise move while closing the Press Meet Cho has announced that the entire proceeds of the IPL 2009 will be given to NASSCOM as there are several million pink slip holders from the IT and ITES Industry who are standing (literally standing outside NASSCOM offices in India) members of the Association.

The Captains of the teams (who are also the owners) have already conducted a public auction and selected players for their teams.

The team members will be announced by the Captains only on 15th May 2009 during the Shuttle flight.  Cho has thanked the Russian government for quick support in agreeing to conducting the IPL 2009 in “Mir”.  Cho is leaving by a special Russian Aircraft this afternoon to oversee the arrangements in the Russian Space Station.

Incidentally, Anand celebrated his “undisclosed” birthday on 3 June 2009.  Also incidentally, he shares his birthday with one of the prominant players of Indian Political League “Kalaignar” M. Karunanidhi, the Tamil Nadu CM – (why Anand has not selected him as an Icon player?).  Also also incidentally, acclaimed film director Maniratnam, who took the movie “Iruvar” portraying the life of Kalaignar Karunanidhi, is also born on 3 June 2009.

The moment Chennai Super Kings was out of the tournament and Royal Challengers went into finals, I wanted Royal Challengers to win the title for two reasons.

1. Remarkable leadership of Anil Kumble – winning 9 out of the last 11 matches and bringing the team up from nowhere to the finals.  Same team that didn’t perform as well under Kevin Pietersen was performing exceptionally well, call it luck or great leadership, Anil Kumble delivered.

2. Royal Challengers Bangalore had played extremely well to beat my favorite team Chennai Super Kings (in the semi-finals) and further were the team with an Indian Captain in it (like the last time).

When Deccan Chargers were restricted to only 143 runs I thought the match would be won quite comfortably by Royal Challengers Bangalore.

However, Royal Challengers set about to chase in a rather cautious way.  An attacking opening partnership would have demoralised the opposition.  But, Kallis was too sedate and the hero of the previous two games Manish Pandey was not getting enough strike.  (He stayed there for almost five overs but got to face only 8 deliveries).

Still even when the 20th over was being bowled, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) still had the chance to win the match but for the foolish batting displayed by Robin Uthappa, who after having given strike by Anil Kumble wasted three precious deliveries without scoring any run.

In the end, Deccan won the match and the cup. Once again, an underdog team led by an Australian Captain lifted the cup, while the Indian captain led team finished second best.

In hind sight, I think I should have backed Deccan to be the winner so that my desire of having Royal Challengers Bangalore would have been fulfilled – as the opposite of what I desired happened throughout this IPL including that of Chennai not being the final as well as KKR doing well.

Congratulations to Deccan Chargers, they really played well to exactly turn the table – from position 8 in 2008 to Team No.1 in 2009.  Let us wait for the Twenty/20 Champions League to commence in October 2009 as well as the Twenty/20 World Cup in England.

The tournament as a whole was very enjoyable.  Even though I do not like Lalit Modi, one must congratulate him and BCCI for making this whole series such a grand success.

As I write this the closing ceremony is about to begin.  Got to go and watch that.  See you!

Oh…. I have to hit a big SIX to cover all the matches to cover before the 41th match starts (assuming I complete this post within the next 30 minutes).

I am determined to cover all the backlog today by hook or Lalit Modi. I am writing these posts not for you who is reading this. I am writing these posts for me and all the IPL players out there. We will read this at leisure when we have all retired and have nothing else to do and when Cricket would have become Coffee10 instead of T20.

Game 2 of D20 of IPL T20 was between two of the Kings as well as between a king and a queen. Chennai Super Kings (owned by the cement king of Tamil Nadu) and Kings XI Punjab (owned by Bollywood queen pretty Preity Zinta).

Chennai came into this match having picked up momentum (who dropped it by the way?) while Kings XI came in with a mixed bag of wins and losses and no clear one way trend. The difference between the two teams’ earlier matches was that Chennai enjoyed consistent performances from its performing players while Kings XI had to look for a new savior every match.

Ahead of the match, I was visualizing it as a head to head battle between the current Indian Captain and possible future captain of India. In my opinion, despite the camaraderie shown by Dhoni and Yuvraj on the field, below the surface there is a rivalry between the two much akin to the old rivalry between Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev.

The first salvo was fired by Dhoni when he won the toss and decided to bat keeping faith on the Massive Hayden and (comparatively) tiny Raina, totally unfazed by the low score posted by Royal Challengers Bangalore.

But the next salvo was fired by Yuvraj, aided by the IPL jinx through Irfan Pathan as the newest Chennai opener Badrinath became the latest hen laying the golden egg. It is becoming difficult to keep track of the number of batsman getting a duck or a golden duck in this tournament.

It was once again left to Hayden – Raina duo to reconstruct the innings for Chennai Super Kings and they did it in style. Raina batting like a colossus and Hayden batting like a Goliath that no David can defeat. Together, Raina and Hayden were averaging 10 runs an over. As if that was not enough, Sangakkara spiced up the wounds of Kings XI by missing a simple chance to stump the highest run getter of tournament so far. The only way the run rain from Raina and Hayna could stop was by having a real rain and the God’s obliged Preity Zinta’s prayer at the Hindu temple in Durban during the tournament

The God induced strategic break resulted in the match being curtailed to 18 overs a side. Two overs post resumption Raina departed having scored 32 of 20 balls with four fours and one six.

But there was no respite for the Kings XI bowlers as Dhoni walked in to join hands and legs with Hayden. Dhoni started off with a four and continued to plunder the bowlers all over the SuperSportsPark.

I wondered if Dhoni and Hayden had previously worked in ISRO, Sri Harikotta. Even the scientists at Sri Harikotta may not launch rockets when it rained. Hayden and Dhoni cared nothing about the weather while batting. Like they cut diamond with diamond, Dhoni and Hayden countered rain with rain – raining sixes and fours.

In all they scored eight fours and eight sixes, that is 80 runs or 80% of the runs scored in a partnership that lasted 100 runs in… oh my God…just 47 deliveries (less than eight overs). It is one thing to have one of the batsman attack and other playing second fiddle; it is totally another when two batsman attack in tandem from both sides.

Last time we witnessed something like that was in the match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkatta Knight Riders when Jayasuriya and Tendulkar tore apart the bowling of Kolkatta Knight Riders averaging 1.71 runs per ball (127 runs off 74 deliveries). Even that savage attack paled into insignificance as this lightening partnership between Hayden and Dhoni produced 2.13 runs per ball (100 off 47). When Hayden finally got out missing a well deserved 100 by just 11 runs already 17 overs had been bowled and just one more over remained in which Dhoni and Albie Morkel added 9 valuable runs to post a total of 185 for the loss Badri, Raina and Hayden.

D/L method added two extra runs to the target thereby challenging Kings XI Punjab to score 188 for a victory.

When Kings XI started their innings, thankfully there was no golden duck. But the first over still produced a wicket when Morkel castled Sohal off the second delivery. Kings XI had strengthened their batting by recruiting Simon Katich and he walked at the fall of the first wicket to join Karan Goel.

Both Morkel and Tyagi, opening the bowling for Chennai bowled reasonably well when Dhoni brought in Gony to bowl the fifth over of the match. Katich found the right bowler to accelerate and launched on Gony blasting three sixes in a row zipping the run rate closer to the required rate that had climbed up to 11.4 by the fourth over.

By the seventh over Goel was also gone gobbled up by the Goan spin wonder Jakati. If you anyone thought that was a set back for Kings XI, they were soon proved wrong as Prince King (Yuvraj) walked in to join Simon Katich. If it was Hayden and Dhoni doing the damage for Kings XI, now it was the turn of Yuvi and Katich to payback. And they did it in remarkable style. But their partnership didn’t last long as Katich departed after reaching his fifty in just 25 balls (3 fours, 4 sixes).

At the fall of Katichs’ wicket, Kings XI still needed 104 runs from 54 balls – nearly two runs a ball. Yuvi intelligently asked Jayawardene to come in ahead of Sangakkara. Jayawardene responded brilliantly to the call.

I have not seen anyone else than Jayawardene play the world’s greatest off-spinner Muralidharan with such great authority. In particular there was one grand six hit by Jaya off Murali, walking two or three paces making himself room and then walloping the ball for a six over extra-cover. Exhilarating stuff!

In the meanwhile, Gony was helping Yuvi by dropping a dolly at long-on. This sloppy fielding at an important juncture resulted in Yuvi joining forces with Jayawardene to deliver more boundaries.

When four overs remained, Kings XI needed 44 runs.

That was when Dhoni played the master stroke. Sensing that the faster bowlers were going for runs he brought it Suresh Raina to bowl the 15th over.

What Suresh Raina bowled was what we used to call in our beach cricket days “poi bowling” – which simply means bowling nothing deliveries at a dicey length to catch the batsman in two minds.

To play those deliveries effectively the batsman has to be fearless and should not be in two minds. But these deliveries have the inherent ability of catching the batsman in two minds because they are bowled dead slow making the batsman wait longer and at a dicey length that prohibits any footwork by the batsman since he cannot gauge the speed of the delivery.

Raina bowled now one, but two overs of “poi bowling” that effectively won the match for Chennai Super Kings. One should also mention the fantastic 18th over bowled by Lakshmipathy Balaji when 24 runs were needed off the last over and Yuvraj at the height of attacking batsmanship was at the crease giving away just 11 runs.

Though the brilliant batting of Hayden, Dhoni and Raina set that impossible target for Kings XI, in my mind those 12 balls bowled by Suresh Raina for just 8 runs at a very crucial juncture was the real turning point in the match. Had those two overs been bowled by anyone else (Morkel, Jagati etc.) Kings XI would have taken atleast 12 runs in each over and romped home winners with one over to spare!

And finally…someone has to have a re-look at the Duckworth-Lewis. It is absurd that on the application of the Duckworth Lewis, team batting second has to chase more runs than what the team batting second has to chase. Few months back we had a match in which the team batting second actually scored few runs more than the team batting first but still lost the match because the DL method had set the target higher than what the first team actually scored.
