Ra Ra says India’s symbol for the Rupee

15 July 2010 2,440 views 5 Comments

Indian rupee finally got a symbol for itself and will now have an unique identity. May be it is time for us to throw all those old soiled notes and get new crispier ones with the new symbol printed on them.

New symbol for rupee has already caught the public imagination.  It is a hot search term in Google today.  View this .

Prices of commodities can now go up with a new symbol.  Rupee can appreciate and depreciate symbol for symbol against the $.  (See full list of currency symbols).  Indian people can give and take bribe with a special symbol attached to their black money.  Voters in Tamil Nadu can start pressing the symbols on the voting machines after seeing the new symbol in the notes handed over to them.

Rich can get richer and show off their money symbolically.  Poor can search for that symbol of success in the modern world.  Google might be of help.

People elsewhere in India who do not speak Hindi may think they got a ra-w deal as the selected symbol after months of pondering is nothing but Hindi letter Ra with a cross in the middle.

Indian Government had earlier shortlisted five symbols from the many received in response to a competition one could have entered paying an entry fee of Rs.(I cannot yet use the symbol for Rupee)500 and stand a chance to win the final prize money of Rs.250,000.

The symbols for Rupee that were in competition

So, all of you who do not have Hindi as the mother tongue, especially those in Tamilnadu who were part of the Quit Hindi movement, have been made to bear the cross with the ra.

I, for one, think that a symbol is better than having none. This symbol was selected from the five (see picture above) that were short listed. I liked the one which symbolically (Symbol No.1 in the picture above) seemed to show Mahatma Gandhi’s face. But then, when there is money, there will be less truth and so would have thought the Government.

I am happy that I will be able to remember the birth of this symbol as it has come about on the day the great leader Kamaraj was born.

It is also a proud moment for all Tamils as the selected Indian Rupee symbol is designed by a Tamil – thirty two year old Udayakumar Dharmalingam.  Besides getting richer by Rs.250,000 for the winning symbol, he must sure be feeling on top of the world as he has entered history books and will most likely feature as an answer to a possibly sure shot quiz question for many years to come.  Congratulations to him!

Hope this ra signals a new era in the e-era!  :)

Udayakumar Dharmalingam is no Bill Gates.  Had he been, he would have fixed a one paisa royalty for every rupee printed and could have become the richest man in the world in few years and stayed there forever.

IIT post-graduate, young D Udaya Kumar deserves a big applaud,he is also getting INR 2,50,000/- for designing this !!

The basic aim of the new symbol is to provide the Indian rupee international recognition as the country’s economy exerts more influence in the global space, the unique sign will also help isolate the currency from the current abbreviation ‘Rs’ which is used by neighbouring Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Regarding parallel lines stands for ‘equal to’ sign : is it representing balance in our economy ? or Indian Govt is trying to maintain that gap between the rich and the poor sections ? or something else ?

Sriram! Oh I am sorry triplicanevaasi,

Yes, MG face is already there in the printed notes. And it is so bad that corruption is being done making him a mute spectator for all transactions.

    But..
Delhi High court allows RTI activist Mr. Rakesh Kumar Singh to file PIL against “Indian Rupee symbol selection process”.

Mr. Rakesh Kumar Singh had submitted a LPA petition in the Delhi High Court challenging Delhi HC earlier judgment in which court had refused to entertain his petition challenging selection process of New Indian Rupee Symbol.

After hearing the LPA, Hon’ble Chief Justice and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Sanjiv Khanna of Delhi High Court in their judgment said “We learned senior counsel appearing for the appellant submitted that he may be permitted to withdraw the appeal as he really does not have the grievance solely because the symbol has not been accepted but he intends to challenge the procedural aspects which are adopted by the Union of India at various levels relating to such kind of works which affect various provisions of the Official Languages Act and many other provisions of various statutes as well as Article 14 of the Constitution of India.

If we understand the submission of Mr. Sawhney in a proper perspective, he wants to file a petition in the larger public interest.

In view of the aforesaid, we are inclined to permit the withdrawal of the appeal with liberty to file a Public Interest Litigation with the appropriate pleadings and data which are necessary to sustain a Public Interest Litigation.” Order: LPA 310/2011
