The case of three Sris – AirTel Super Singer Junior
The “wild card” round of the Airtel Super Singer Junior which was telecast on Thursday night – 27th May 2010 was a real treat to watch. I saw the re-telecast on Friday morning as well as on Saturday night.
I can watch this programme every day and still not get bored as the performance by the “Sri”s was extraordinary. Srikanth, Srinisha, NithyaSri and Srihari were truly amazing in their presentation of such difficult songs.
Srinisha started off with the great song rendered by K.B. Sundarambal. I have heard this song being sung by several people in the past and the one sung by Priya Subramanian was the closest rendition to that of the legendary K.B.S. But the rendition of Srinisha was so classical I would rate that the closest rendition to that of the legendary KBS so far. I closed my eyes and could really hear the voice of KBS through Srinisha. It was astonishing that at such young age (she is only 10 years old) she was able to sing the song to perfection with lot of passion and involvement. Like Mr.Unni Menon said “Hats Off” to Srinisha for such an excellent performance that too on a very difficult song.
I have always felt that the best songs were composed and written during the Golden 50 years of Cinema, i.e., 1950 – 2000. The recent songs over the last 10 years have clearly exposed the lack of originality and creativity. We have been hearing mostly re-mix over the last 10 years. I heard a song “Oh Mahasiya Oh Mahasiya naaku mukku naakka boom shakalakka oh rendakka”. When I first heard this song I thought it is some kind of a Hindi Song in a Tamil Movie but when I heard it the second time I started laughing. They have used all the “alien” words used in recent tamil songs and made it into a full song with words like “Oh Mahasiya” “Naaku Mooku” “Boom Shakalaka” “Rendakka” “Maiya Maiya”. I don’t know if this the true depiction of the recent trend in Tamil Cinema Songs or a mockery of the state of affairs today. Nevetheless this song is very enjoyable and nice to hear as you can laugh your guts out whenever you hear this song.
Under the present circumstances it is really very soothing to find young kids singing some of the old songs. They first listen to the old songs, form a liking, practice it, enjoy singing the song and then come on to the stage to perform in front of the audience.
For a six year old boy Srikanth to sing “Dham thantha namtha namtham” was truly amazing. I am appalled by the enormity of the memory power of this small kid. He remembers such a difficult song fully with the lyrics, ups and downs, voice modulations, interlude music and he rendered the song to its perfection and lot of passion. In the Airtel Super Singer ealier version for Seniors Ravi sang this song very well. This song is very difficult to sing and the original version sung by Shri.S.P.Balasubramaniam is so nice that even after couple of decades the song is fresh in our minds. The great Singer Nithya Shree (One of the judges) went to the stage and carried the boy and asked “can you teach me how to sing”. This was the greatest award for this young boy. This six year old kid is a great stage performer with extraordinary abilities.
SriHari sang “Kangalum Kavipaaduthe” very well. Like Mr.Unni Menon said it is difficult to sing the song which was originally sung by two great legends. He did total justice to that song though at some places he was struggling to breathe. It was a very good effort overall by Sri Hari as this is again a very difficult song to sing.
Then came the greatest singer of this lot “Nithyasri”. She sang “Pattathu Raani Paarkkum Paarvai” with total ease, passion and involvement. She not only did singing but also did wonderful hip movements for the song. I have never heard anyone sing this song so well so far. After the original singer Ms.L.R.Easwari I would say this young singer who is only 10 years old did total justice for the song. This girl is a true stage performer and a fantastic singer.
Priyanka did her best for the song “Mannavan vandaanadi thozhi” though her voice did not come off as well as the others. It sounded very soft and I felt she sang without any involvement in the song.
Vishnucharan did his best for “Isai kettaal puvi asainthaadum athu iraivan arul aagum”. This again is a very difficult song to sing and he did well with total control and passion.
Srikant, Srinisha and Nithyasri will have a very good future as stage performers and Singers and I pray to God to give them long life, lot of energy and musical knowledge to improve and continue to perform for a long number of years.

Hi Anand,
First of all thanks for posting your views… thats good… all the participants are very good…no doubt in that…
This is singing competition and not dancing competition…U said, priyanka din’t show involvment in this song.. involvment in the sense, u meant dancing while singing..?
Requesting you, While posting these kinda of comments please don’t show partiallity to any child based on other then the objective…
here we have to look , whether they are singing well are not…and not whether they are dancing or not…
if they are judging based on performing on the stage (dancing, etc) then they shoudl named it as singing and dancing competition…
u mentioned only those three kids have very good future in music world and others are not…? is it?
All the kids equally talented and equally good… if u like somebody then keep it with u, instead don’t post in these kinda of blogs… don’t discourage anyone… thanks… everyone have verygood future…!
don’t mistake me if i my words hurt u in anymeans…!
T.P. Anand’s made his comments on this programme in a wonderful way like a live commentary of a cricket match. Though I missed to watch this programme, I could able to realise the excellence of performance made by our younger generation. In this fast track world, it is a good sign that in the recent times, the television media is creating good opportunities to the young talents with such good quality programmes.

Dear Shyam,
I have apprecaited the singing of all the kids. I am not discouraging any of them. If by mentioning a few names you think I have discouraged the others then I apologise for my mistake. My remarks on involvement is relating to bringing the emotion in the song and has nothing to do with the dancing or ability to entertain.
They are all brilliant in their singing and it is really God’s gift that these children have the courage and ability to go and sing on the stage.
Thanks a lot for your comments as these comments help me to further refine my own articles in the future.
Regards,
Anand T.P.

Thanks very much Anand….! Really sorry if my words are wrong in anymeans..!
Dear TP,
Yet an other excellent article. I am regular viewer of Airtel Super Singer Juniors. As Anand says, these kids of Great Courage, Skills & Passion to perform on such a platform. I think we need give credits to these TV channels that conduct such programs. Infact, we should all participate in voting these people via their website (if you are outside India) or SMS.
Cheers,
Venky.
Our favourite old hit songs have become more sweet to hear in the young voice of Srikant, Srinisha and Nithyasri. Tears came out of my eyes to hear the song sung by 7 year old Srikant “paatum Naane, Baavamum Naane” with perfect lyrics and expressions.
I never miss to see his singing as he exactly look like my Brother’s son. I like sweet voice of Alka Ajith. She is doing extremely well. Yesterday in the Most Progressive Singer Round, Shravan sang the song “Nilave Ennidam Nerungathe” simply superb. His Grandmother wiped her eyes with hands when he sung the above song. He presented the song very well. Shravan and Alka are already selected for Finals are just concentrating on singing, presentation of song, voice modulation and expression and they are not dancing.(Mr.Shyam please note) They have been blessed with beautiful voice. The cute tiny Srikant is an unbelievable performer, remembering the lyrics of the song, the tune, the ups and downs, the background score while also mimicking the mannerism of the hero of the song and dancing as well. Really feeling happy to see his performance. His parents are blessed to have a child like him. Hats off, Srikant. My Best Wishes to all of them.
The performance of the Kids is commendable. No doubt on that. When it comes to the TV Channels while one should appreciate them for giving the platform, one should also consider the hardship they might give to the kids participating in the program which is never visible in the final telecast. Children might be made to wait long, go thru rehearsals, perform in extreme heat from the studio bulbs, skip food etc. Besides all these, there will also be feeling of disappointment when they are judged on stage in front of everyone.
S for Super
S for Scintilating
S for Simple
S for………………………………….. Do I need to say….
I have been watching the show but controlled myself not to make any post as I have made good enough post for Seniors Super Singer.
The kids has been so great that I needed control myself from tears so often than not whenever these kids performing. I had been bit harsh over GOD for not giving me such talents (but hey..people say I sing well though…may be they are d…..
)
Jokes apart, Srikanth has been my favourite. Does not really matter whether he wins or not, but his sense to Thalam is simply great.
However, others like Nithjya Sri has only been showing off as entertainer and the other singer, who is son of a stage singer have been stereo type and always sings all the songs in western style only.
Shravan is so hhumble and a big future Classical talent. Watch out….may be another Sanjay subramanian…
