Assume you are on your way to your office and you are already running late.

Half way through you realize that you have forgotten your wallet.

And you have no money in your person.  The wallet has your identify proofs, driving license, cards and of course cash.  Assume your identify proofs are even more important to be carried with you in the country you are living (as it is the case here in Kuwait and many countries here in middle-east).

What will you do?

There are of course options available for you.  You can drive back home and pick up the wallet and reach office with the comfortable feeling of having the wallet and all the paraphernalia that are kept in that.  But, then you will end up reaching office further late than you already are.  There is also the risk that on your way back you might be caught by the police doing the rounds, asking for your identity proofs.

You can as well drive through to the office and take some money from your colleagues to see the day through.  But then, there is also the risk of you having an accident while driving the remaining distance to the office.  You might be required to produce the license if the police gets involved.

That was the predicament I faced today.  Wallet is something that may not at all come to use on many days when it is in one’s possession.  But, you might end up needing it many times over on the one rare occasion you do not have it with you; as if to prove Murphy’s Law.

I took the option, that I thought at that time, was safer.  Turned the car around driving back home to fetch my wallet  and reached office some more minutes late, but feeling comfortable. Luckily, nothing untoward happened while I was driving back home, though I was tensed even during that time.

What would you have done?  And why?

I would have also done the same. When you are already late there is no harm if you are late by few more minutes.

I always check everything before leaving home as a regular practice everyday in the morning.

It happened couple of times with me, when i was in Chennai …

I forgot to take the wallet… I realized it when i was on the way(mid of my office and home)….

    What I DID ?
I went straight a way to office as I was late by 15 minutes got struck in traffic(Courtesy Kathipara flyover construction was going on)….

    Why?

I was about to give a training for few users who flew from Hyderabad especially for this training.
I used to go by bike. I filled the petrol last evening and I used to keep my bike in good condition that it has not let me down on the way :-) so no worries of breakdown…
Lunch @ office cost :-) Due to that training.
If required I can take some money from friends.
Above all I got a copy of my driving license and other documents in my bike.

I reached home without spending any money and without borrowing also.

    Anand,

    I also do the same.

The funny thing was, when I left home and was getting into the lift to go down to the car park, I had a strange feeling that I was missing something. Generally I think a little and touch my pockets to see if I had taken everything. Today, I ignored that alert assuring to myself that nothing was missing. And then, half-way down I realized it was the wallet I had forgotten.

Few times, I have missed the mobile but then carried on without worrying about it.

    Anu(win) Dreams,

Unfortunately, I could not take copies of the currency notes! And the ATM machines do not accept copy of the ATM card. :)

After reading this article, I understand the value of being in our own country, so, there is no need to worry about ID proofs…! Hats off. Nice blog.

The only thing that worries me is forgetting a mobile phone. :)

    Gouthaman,

I agree with you about ID proofs not needed in our country. However, haven’t you come across situations when you are required to prove you are you and have to run from pillar to post to establish that? Regarding forgetting a mobile phone, I have a half baked post on that. Will have to complete it.
