Review of Unnaipol Oruvan

28 September 2009 1,129 views 6 Comments

When I was in Chennai recently, this movie (Unnaipol Oruvan) was released; but the date of release kind of hanged in balance for quite some time due to the court case filed by Pyramid Saimeera for recovering money invested by them in Kamal Haasan’s Marmayogi.

Satyam Cinema’s had advertised in the papers that the bookings would be open on 12th or so. My second son wanted to see the movie with me while I was in Chennai. So he kept trying Satyam for advance booking the tickets the moment it opened.

As bad luck would have it, the court case came up and with that the booking didn’t open as advertised. When it did open we had given up calling the theater for booking the ticket. I had to return back to Kuwait without watching the movie :(

Having seen A Wednesday, I really wanted to see the Kamal’s version of the movie. I especially was anxious to watch it since the impact of terror attacks in South India, especially in Tamilnadu was that much less. To create the same impact that A Wednesday created, I thought Kamal would have to stretch himself a bit.

Though I returned back to Kuwait without watching the movie, I had placed my bets on seeing this movie during my upcoming visit to Chennai for Deepavali (hoping that the movie would still be on the screens till then).

But my second son Anand Surya never gave up. He went ahead to book the ticket and watched the movie with my family today.

He liked the movie and sure it has created an impact on him, so much so that he has gone ahead and written a short and sweet blog post (review) on the movie.  There are no spoilers in his movie review post.  Hence, if you have not seen the movie, without much worry you can read it here.

I like “A Wednesday” and N’Shah better than UPO Kamal. But the clash between M’Lal Vs A’Kher the verdict is still out ….. both did a good job.

    Ram,

Naseeruddin Shah, I also think Naseeruddin Shah in “A Wednesday” was more subtle than Kamal in UPO. But then, you should also note that Shah portrayed a old man look matching his physique while Kamal portrayed that of a middle aged man and accordingly changed the tone of dialogue and body language.
