IPL 2 – Day Five – King Fisher didn’t fly
But the balls bowled at Gilchrist and Rohit Sharma did.
When did we last watch a match this IPL lasting full 40 overs? I think it was the very first match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians that lasted the full quota. It is after six matches that we got a full paisa (or rand) vasool.
My interest in this match was to find out (besides the excitement of watching cricket without rain):
1. If the Rs.6+ crore price tagged Kevin Pietersen comes good
2. If Deccan continued its charge and successfully met the challenge of Royal Challengers
It is now clear that Royal Challengers are no match to any team in this tournament. All other teams are Gayles ahead of Royal Challengers.
At this rate, Mr. Mallya will have to put down his peg of RC and Fly Kingfisher the whole team back to India. That would be trendsetting – “a flyover instead of a walkover” for the other teams!
Gilchrist and Rohit Sharma simply toyed with the bowling of Royal Challengers. 123 runs between the two of them with 10 sixes is the kind of cricketing fireworks one would like to watch in any T20 game.
The Jumbo that took off in the first match with a five wicket haul was forced to touch down while Rohit Sharma launched three more satellites without the help of ISRO (thanks Cricinfo):
12.1 Kumble to Sharma, SIX, top shot for six! Kumble flights it down leg stump, Rohit kneels down and sweeps hard and flat, there are calls for the catch but a desperate effort on the ropes wont do 12.2 Kumble to Sharma, no run, expectedly this is shorter and flatter, Rohit punches into the covers 12.3 Kumble to Sharma, SIX, lovely use of the feet from Rohit, dancing down to meet the ball on the volley and he swings it miles over midwicket for six more, an expensive over continues 12.4 Kumble to Sharma, SIX, short outside off stump and Rohit picks it up from where it pitches, smacked over midwicket for six, really a top shot because that was a quick delivery
When the DC ended their innings at 184 after 20 overs I still had a faint hope that RC can chase it down as the wicket was good and RC had Ryder, Pietersen, Kallis, Uthappa and “in terrific T20 form” Dravid (strike rate of 125% plus in the tournament and orange cap) in their ranks.
Jesse Ryder failed again making me think if he forgot to pack his form when he left from New Zealand. He has not yet opened his account in this tournament and neither has he succeeded much as a bowler.
Ryder’s failure has been personally costing me points at the Fantasy Cricket Game run by www.cricketnext.com. He has earned me just 68 points while I have tasted better success with Gilli, Yuvi, Mahi and Viru.
At the end of day Five, I have earned 9297 points in all and am ranked 3,536 amongst all those who play the game. As luck would have it, I will drop Ryder for the next match and he will come up with a century and take five wickets!
With Robin Uthappa displaying his “out”standing form it was Dravid who really took the DC bowling apart continuing to prove a pint or two to Vijay Mallya. Virat Kohli made a superb fifty with real lusty hits but that was just not enough for RC to win the match!
I think the match was blown out of the hands of RC when Gilli-Rohit played duet at high decibels tearing apart RC bowling.
I had played in favor of Deccan Chargers at the Fantasy Cricket Game and reaped rich rewards due to the success of Gilchrist as a batsman and Captain. See my point score for the match!

Since the match had high and quick scores from both sides (more from Deccan Chargers than Royal Challengers), out of the two sets of cheer girls, one got to see one set more often on the tele.
