Ravi my favorite to win Super Singer 2008
Super Singer 2008 is one mega talent search show telecast on Vijay TV every week Monday to Wednesday at 9 PM IST.
The show is extremely popular and is very keenly watched by Tamils around the world.
It is so well produced that other copycat programs produced by other television channels (read Sun TV) have not been able to attain the high quality or provide the sheer viewing pleasure provided by Super Singer 2008. The show which started sometime in the middle of 2008 is at the home bend with just few weeks to go before the Super Singer 2008 is judged.
The sure shot finalists at this point in time are Ravi, Ajeesh and Renu with one more slot to be filled after a wild card round.
By now the wild card round would have already been shot and the last finalist would have also been selected. The wild card round will be a competition between three more excellent singers Prasanna (making a comeback after elimination in the quarter finals few episodes back), Vijay Narayanan and Ranjani (sent to compete in the wild card round after the last week’s semi-finals).
When you watch any competition you tend to support someone as your favorite. I didn’t get the opportunity to watch the initial episodes of SS 2008 but heard from my wife and my brother about Ravi’s wonderful singing that made me watch the program regularly from December 2008. (My brother incidentally is a colleague of Ravi at Hexaware, Chennai).
Since then, I have been watching the program regularly without missing an episode. From the time I started watching it regularly, I picked Ravi as the first of my two favorites; the other being the fantastic Prasanna. (Prasanna is not in the fray at this point, but I think he has great potential to grow into a delight of the audience in the years’ to come due to his exemplary ability to involve and entertain much like Usha Utup or Shankar Mahadevan or Sukhwinder Singh or our very own unforgettable L R Eswari)
Ravi is more classical compared to Prasanna. He is calm and composed most of the time and doesn’t show any emotion while singing or hearing comments. But he is immensely talented. Has a wonderful voice. He has also been intelligently selecting the songs that suit his style of singing and voice.
I got hooked to hearing his singing from the time I heard him sing that super composition of A R Rahman “udhaya udhaya ularalillai” in the movie Udaya. I love to see his involved singing with his eyes closed as though he has immersed himself into a pond filled with the song being rendered.
Every time he comes on to the stage he creates a wave of excitement and anticipation amongst the audience. When he sings one can easily observe that the judges start enjoying his singing as well.

Ravi’s rendition of these songs were just fantabulous to say the least. Hearing him sing these numbers made me head to youtube to find video clips of the past episodes of Super Singer 2008 searching for his past performances.
Though richly deserving, Ravi somehow missed out on winning the prize of prize of A R Rahman autographed Guitar in a small competition held when the Super Singer contestants participated in a tribute to Rahman for winning the Golden Globe and BAFTA.
I do think Ravi will be carrying with him some disappointment of not winning that great prize.
My heart wants him to be the winner of Super Singer 2008 in a few weeks time. However, the competition is not going to be easy, especially with Ajeesh who is also a great talent with a super voice. If anything, these two are going to make the judges job even more difficult.
As a person who has picked Ravi as the favorite to win Super Singer 2008, I fervently hope that Ravi continues to perform well in the remaining part of the competition and finishes at the winning post.
To win, he might well require the support of SMS wielding Vijay TV viewers across India as Vijay TV may leave the final decision to the viewers. If this article helps him to get atleast 1 SMS vote, I will be very happy.

I fully agree with you regarding the singing of Ravi. I somehow feel that Prasanna will end up as the winner given his style and involvement. Prasanna is a good entertainer and the judges have been repeatedly saying this that the singer should be good in singing and at the same time get involved in the song and try and entertain the audience. Prasanna fits into that perfectly though in terms of quality fo singing Ravi is several notches above Prasanna.
Let us wait and see as Ranjani, Renu and Ajeesh are all very good singers.
I have watched Super Singer till March and i must say that even the judges, viz., Unnikrishnan, Sujatha and Srinivas are doing a great job.

I actually support Renu more .. though i like the singing of Ravi & Ajesh. She’s flawless when it comes to the rendering (to my layman’s ears) and an amazing diction, apart from the no emotion during feedback session and a pleasant smile always handy.
I agree with Ram and looks like Renu might clinch the trophy ahead of all others. My wife and her parents also favour Renu winning it as a dark horse. Let us wait and see.

For once (once only) I differ from you both
IMHO, Renu has a very good voice but lacks variety. You don’t need to have walkman ears to note that she doesn’t try different things. I agree that she has a very good voice. The search is for the best singer and not the best voice! May be her pleasant smile is sweeping the judges over and allow her to get a better ranking all the time.

Regarding Prasanna, I think if SPB was the judge, Prasanna would have won mikes down just because of his ability to pull the crowd along and the energy and enjoyment he brings about when singing. But, the judges think otherwise. One of the panelists (Sreenivas, I think) commented that Prasanna is best suited for Kuthu paattu. That was not in good taste at all. I watched Prassi sing “Kettukodi Urumi Melam” and was thrilled! Man what a super song! (You can watch the song here)
I also to feel that the judges look for the singers to exactly imitate the original singers and not do much extra. That might explain why the panel constantly pulls down Vijay Narayan who experiments a lot.

The chances for Renu are not that great especially because, Vijay TV most likely will announce SMS voting for choosing the super singer 2008. In that case, it will be either Ravi or Ajeesh who will be crowned.
I too think Ravi has great chance to clinch the title. But still though Renu does not have variety, she also has a chance just because right now she is the only one female in the challenge. That gives her chance of differentiating herself while the judges will find it very difficult to judge to good male voice.
Having seen the way discussion had gone, I think we have a big treat.
I hope Prasanna makes it to the li(a)st 4.
I guess Ranjini will come back and give a surprise. She has sung very difficult songs like “Tahmizhukkum amudhendru per”. Has a good voice range. And she lost very marginally.

The final is going to be really interesting with each one of the contestant being a favorite of one or other. We should wait and see how the wild card round goes and who the public chooses. I think Prasanna is sure to get into finals on public opinion as also Ranjani.
Then once again there will be public voting to choose the ultimate winner. My favorite to win is still Ravi because he has the all round ability.
i have to agree that renu does lack variety. a lovely voice but my personal favourites are actually ajeesh and ranjani. even vijay. i think vijay has so much potential. just some exceptional bad luck with the voice and pitching.
triplicani, i do however beg to differ as i believe that what draws the judges to vijay is his ability to create new sangathis. He is so comfortable with the structure of the songs that he is able to recreate and elaborate accordingly. renu and ranjani however appear to stay quite clear from that. ajeesh has also tried his hand. in the semi-finals he rendered some very creative sangathis with thoongatha vizhigal and elangkaathu veesuthe.
the super singer, i think would have to be someone who is both technically wise and expressively competent. another criteria would be the uniqueness of a voice. when we listen to a record, we can always pick out kjy, spb, m’sia vasu, jayachandran etc. coz their voices were unique and some songs would not sound as good had the other singer rendered it. so what the play back scene appears to require would be a competent new voice.
the fact that this series would end with the singer performing to Yuvan Shankar Raja makes it all the more interesting. YSR tends to create a variety of songs. i cant quite pin point what his style his. so the more versatile the singer, the more opportunities he or she will have to record their voices on a soundtrack.
that’s why i actually think that if vijay picks himself up in this wild card round and subsequently in the finals, he might be able to shock everyone. he is the most versatile of the lot. he has a unique voice, is incredibily talented and there really isnt much he cant do. technicality has been a severe problem however.
my favourites are ajeesh and ranjani however.
i have only seen the highlights to the wildcard round. can i mention that i am terribly disappointed with raagini sri’s selection of song. i havent heard the whole song but i saw the promo and was thinking, why dont you prove yourself with a real duet song. anyway,these are my thoughts. thank you for the opportunity to discuss. always feel like i learn alot through these blog discussions. coz everyone has their own unique perspective

By the time I wrote this post, the first installment of wild card round is over.
As predicted the final entrant to the finals is going to be selected by the public sms-ing their votes. But, I found a distinct partiality in the way the panel of judges commented after each song. In the past, when it was wild card round, the judges used to just talk equally good about all the contestants. Now, it seem there is a distinct bias on the contestants.
I was very surprised by the open endorsement of Ranjani (by Mahathi) and Vijay (by Uma Padmanaban). Probably they are going to get one each for the other contestants too. If they do it then it is fine, else it will be unfortunate partiality.
Happy to hear from the judges that Prasanna was not only missed by me but also by several people… On popular support alone, I think Prassi has a great chance to win, if he gets a chance to go to the final. Even though he sang well in the WC round (Poi Indri Meyyodu Nei Kondu Ponaal) I felt he should not have changed his style for the purposes of the judges!

Renu happens to be my choice.With her velvetty voice she will go places no doubt. As far as I can see her only draw back is that she is not as confident as others.If only she could be confident I think she has a good chance of becoming the super singer

Renu has a super voice. But not the variety to be the super singer.
I think irrespective of who wins the title all of these finalists and semi-finalists will become playback singers in the future.

it’s been a pleasure to have similar minded folk to share my thoughts with and learn from. have you heard santosh’s 3rd day song?/ somehow after that performance, i have changed my tune rather drastically. i am very keen to have santhosh in the finals. his voice is very nice and if he can pull off the bandit queen song without much classical background, i think he has great potential.what do u think.
Both Santhosh and Ragini Shree had surprise packages in the wild card round.
I have voted three times for Prasanna, however, eventhough the judges openly canvassed for not voting to Prasanna by saying “vote for real music” and thus meaning Prasanna’s was a performance but not music. That is very bad.
Hi….I feel prassi & ranjani shud go to the finals…& title card to be won by RAVI….Ranjani takes much pain & sings all diff songs…prasanna is a good performer…he has all the capabilities to be super singer…thou judges mention that he lacks in carnatic knowledge, thats not a must for playback singing.
coming to renu….as u say her voice is a great adv…but she is not versatile….so she may get dropped off in finals…
Ajeesh to me….he does not give good performance consistently….rather he signs nice rarely..& semifinals was his day….but if u watch his prev performances he is not that good…

ragini’s selection of song in wildcard was very bad…..not to be sung in a stage show….& one the second part….the “swasamae” was a kind of ok….but “Konjam Nilavu” was Rocking/…even thou she has a potential she does no give consistent performance as ranjani..
so to my knowledge, prassi & ranjani have bright chances to enter finals….& title card for Ravi….I love his singing…but who knows? lets await for the Great Surprise!!!!!

I too feel the same about Raghini Shree’s singing.
She was totally out of sorts in Swasamae but was clearly in some kind of discomfort; later she told the judges that she was very hungry (I could see her being impatient on stage when the judges remarks were prolonging despite she having said she was hungry. I am surprised Vijay TV could not provide something to eat to the singer – very bad).
However, she rocked singing Konjan Nilavu (her style of song) but floundered on lyrics in quite a few places.
Whatever the judges may think about Prassi’s lack of Carnatic knowledge, I am very certain that he is going to become real big in the future.
I do not understand why people try to box someone with natural talent. We would not have got Kapil Dev or Sehwag or Jayasuriya or Krish Srikkanth in Cricket if they exactly followed the coaching manual. The natural flair is much more important in my opinion. SPB, the legend, is not also with any Carnatic base.

It is not that anyone is trying to box Prasanna’s talent and again we can’t compare Prasi with legends, it’s like comparing an apple with a watermelon. Yes I agree Prasanna got natural talent, can we analyse it further, it is not in singing but entertaining, probably what he does to his children at home. Cricket and singing, again not right comparison. See Prasanna can only be booked if he has his own voice and not all the time imitate what the original song is. True, no need carnatic knowledge to sing, but with it you are way better. SPB sir started 30 years ago and now we are in 2009. Prasi tried his luck in Kalaka Povathu Yaar but failed and ended up in ASS. See he was lucky enough to be given a spot on top 20 in the beginning itself. About his attitude or any other contestant’s attitude or character, unless you know them personally you can’t be sure off. To be booked you first need to be technically correct. No directors would sit there and say improvise like this, do sing like that and etc. If you are in this industry, then you will understand what I say. It is like a chartered accountant is better than those accountants who has not finished their papers. Ragini, all I got to say is Hariharan’s comment itself is enough to prove she is technically one of the best (she has her strength like carnatic, western and not good in melody) and the three judges are not dumb. They each have been judging other shows, for e.g. Srini-Gandharva Sangetham, Sujatha another Kerala junior show and Unni in adult version of that show.
And now Seetha,
Watch tonights episode where Ajesh, Renu and Ravi sings with Swetha, Mukesh and Saindhavi. Watch closely and listen to their voice without seeing them. Listen to what Hariji got to say. And Ranjani doesn’t take pain in singing, Renu does. In fact Ranjani is showing her versatility and she is the best in this aspect in ASS, better than Ravi. Ravi can’t beat Renu and Ajesh in melody and can’t be as fun as Prasi or even as versatile as Ranjani or as creative as Vijay. But he is equally good with Ragini in carnatic and probably end up as a carnatic singer as his voice was told to sound very feminine if you have realised. Watch him pulling the song vennilave and killing it tonight. If you think carnatic base isn’t important for playback, than Renu also could be winning as she is better than Prasana in melody and has a better voice. Agree? See this clearly show you guys giving out own opinions and not being fair but again that’s nothing wrong. And then Ajesh, inconsistent huh, that is because you people don’t get the plot of the show. I give a hint. Why would there be one whole week wasted to put him alone in bottom (western round, yes he didn’t sing as good as other rounds but his marks were not the lowest) and then end up being acknowledged by Anupama. Why would they save Renu killing Kandha naal mudhalai in carnatic round and allow Ranjani and Ajesh to sing in front of Sudha maam, again end up liking them. Why would Ajesh get excellent comments one week and then not the other? But all the excellent comments are when the timing is the most perfect one isn’t it. Stephen’s unplugged round, Chitra maams round, ARR round, Semi-finals (almost all guest judges) and what’s next, watch! Last hint, Hariharan’s week, i.e. this week, see among the final 3 who gets the best words and then watch next week a pre final episode and watch who turns to win nothing and by then you would have seen the thing I am saying. Good luck everyone. May the best win. But I don’t blame you at all when you said Ravi and Renu are consistent. I can still accept Ravi is (consistent but not progress, good but not the best unlike Ranjani and Ajesh) and Renu (must be not knowing anything about music and you would have believed what you watch on the screen to say Renu is consistent). I don’t think there would be any surprise if Ravi doesn’t win (look next weeks episode and see how many winnings he gets) and the title goes to a girl as a guy has already won it! Wait and watch.
I am not saying a girl would win but there shouldn’t be any surprises if Renu or Ranjani wins it! After all YSR is at the peak of finding a female voice for his next movie? Is this rumours? Probably!

Yes, each and everyone who had followed and following super singer will agree that Ravi is the only singer who has been singing consistently and more importantly with very less flaws.

comparing Ranjani and Ravi…gosh..I think you have got everything going wrong in this particular issue. Ranjani is no way near to Ravi. I accept Ajeesh to a larger extent.
I too felt that Prasi is a very good entertainer. He will be a perfect opponent for Ravi in the upcoming Finals.

I don’t deny that Ravi is versatile but tell me one category of singing apart from carnatic which is he the best at? Western – Ragini, Melody –Ajesh/Renu, Ravi is a good singer but not the best. That is the point. So doesn’t matter if he gets immunized twice or all the time. But throughout the most important stages of the competition he loses out illeya? Apart from Aachi Manorama, any other rounds he won with legends there and even Semi-Finals Renu was clearly better. And you must have watched the edited version of Ravi singing venilave venilave and what Hariharan spoke about it.
I am following each and every episode of ASS but I (although the quantity is one here but in public is more) don’t agree that Ravi is the only singer who has been singing consistently and more importantly with very less flaws. Ranjani can be a very tough competition to Ravi and Renu can outwin him easily if melody and Ajesh is another one to watch out. As it is obvious all 35-50 aged couple seems to fall in love with Ravi’s emotionless/overreacting singing.
I completely agree that Prasi is a very good entertainer but he will not be a perfect opponent for Ravi in the upcoming Finals. The reason we kept Prasi is to make money and I don’t wish to go on explaining this. You people, if intelligent enough would have noticed this and the reason behind it if you watched the Coimbatore show aired Wednesday and Thursday 7-9.

What has Renu got other than a good voice any reasonable female singer will have? I do not see anything great about her singing. If you ask me to choose between Renu or Ranjani (pitting girls against girls) I will any day go for Ranjani (or even Raghini Shree) over Renu who is just bland. She also imitates all the songs.
Secondly, don’t go too much over that arrogant fellow called Hariharan. We respect people who have achieved much much more than Hariharan has done and still maintain humility. This guy was there crossing his legs on the show and showing off as if he is God of singing, whereas the singing God is there every Saturday at 8 PM on Jaya TV. Hariharan comes as a cropper in humility. If you have influence and an insider of Super Singer, please pick up courage and tell this arrogant man to watch SPB for few weeks.
In my opinion, Ravi sang the Venilavey song well. As regards how to appreciate the lyrics of that song while singing, he just muttered what ARR and Vairamuthu taught him while he went to sing. Who knows how many takes he took in that song and what struggles ARR and Vairamuthu went thru before Hari completed that song recording.
Just because he came as special guest there it doesn’t mean that he is super human to bad mouth people (behind the scenes as you have said).
Whether you like it or not, whether the judges like it or not, I stand by my view that a good singer should be ultimately someone who can entertain people and make them feel happy listening to that song. Nuances of a song is for the pundits who are probably few thousands. Let them march to Music Academy and keep saying Carnatic is the best and kill that fantastic art form to die a slow death.
Coming to the great judges of the show, it is the same judges who keep saying that Prasanna is not original always comment to the other singers “fantasic, appidiye original polave padichu”.

However Ajesh could be a dark horse and steal the crown. The thing with Ajesh is that he is innovative and tries new improvisions which was evident in the semi final. He shocked the judges with his first song. He seems to deliver a great performance when it is most needed. However due to the lack of power in his voice (mostly due to his age) he slightly lags behind Ravi and Renu.

Ravi is a perfectionist as far as the technical aspects of music are concerned. His professionalism is very good and is the reason why he is the most consistent performer. Renu has similar qualities to Ravi. Ranjani sings effortlessly (she has got such a great voice), and as a result the feel of the song is less. However there is no doubt that she a great singer. Prassana is trapped in the mindset of energetic songs so he cannot consider winning the final unless he turns a new leaf.
Despite all the drags in the show, I feel that it was great and of high quality. Vijay Tv is becoming very powerful now due to its quality

First of all Why there are 5 finalist? Can anybody explain? If you guys watched
closely ss2008 you noticed that:
Prasanna: good entatainer
Renu: great Voice
Ajees: nice improvisation
Ranjini: good improvement
SS 2008 is a competition: only the one who takes it seroiusly should win apart from
whether he/she got grat voice or trained in clasical music. It fact ONLY Ravi performed the most taff-songs in SS 2008.
From the Beginning of the Show He gives his Best. The others didnt take this competition very serious. They cannot even believe, they came so far. The friendly round has shown even in this round ravi performed Karna and the other taff songs again.
The most possitive comments and the most prize went to RAVI, for his hard work. Unni Sir stood up to wish RAVI for his performence “Issai Kettal” and Manoramma too.
And Srinivas Sir said also after The medlay round ” if you continues
the moment who know you could win the Super Singer”. As far as SS 2008 is a competition ONLY The BEST CAN WIN.
I am sure HE WILL take the final serious and Will win SS 2008 Title. Good Luck to the others you are also great Singers.

Prassi, i like u very much.But i pesonally feel u hav to take training 4 giving 100%.U r a good performer.Cant just forget ur lajjavathi performance in other language round.I think u r having the most people’s support.Prassi is a natural perfomer.Performance is here with him.But he really has a long way to go in the view of musicality.

Iam a great great fan of Ravi, i was very upset in the result of finals,ravi is excellent singer, but he worked hard, but he was not selected as supersinger, but i pray to god that he defintely suceed in the cinefield,iam waiting for hearing his song in theatre.My wish defintely for him,i want Ravi email id to encourage him, that defintely he will suceed in cinefield, even my daughter like ravi singing, on finals he sang om namo narayana (my 2yr daughter dancing and hearing the music,and my another daughter 7yrs old is a great fan of ravi).
