Tata Nano – First Drive Video

More than thirty years ago, Sanjay Gandhi promised the cheapest car in the world. Named “Maruti”. It was initially priced at Rs.40,000 (If my memory serves right). However, it didn’t came out as the car of the middle class.

The car crazy richie rich queued up to buy the car and it soon became a status symbol so much so that the allotment letter went for a premium.

Rs.40,000 of thirty years’ before is much higher amount today, adjusting for inflation. But, Maruti has somewhat become an ordinary car in the eyes of the rich and famous. They have graduated to Benz, BMW, Toyota and Skoda and Maruti has come within the reach of the high density middle class. Still I think a new Maruti costs upwards of Rs.2.75 lacs even today.

Under these circumstances, it is creditable that TATAs have kept their promise and have come out with the poor man’s car at just Rs.1 lac (about US $ 2000 at the current exchange rates). This is super duper achievement.

That the TATAs achieved despite so many politically motivated obstacles is even more creditable. The car opened for public booking yesterday. I think now parents can buy a Nano instead of a bike for their sons and stop worrying about road safety. Same way, ladies who now ride a TVS Schooty or a Hero Honda Pleasure (why should boys have all the fun?)

I think this Car might very well become the blockbuster hit for TATA. The export potential for this car is also very high, in my opinion.

This is time to stand-up and salute Tata’s for this innovation and the engineering marvel they have created.

Here is the first drive video of the this super car. Enjoy!
