Just came back from office and tuned on to the news on TV and was shocked to see the news of gangrape of a 24 year old girl, an MBA student, in Nodia, a satellite township near New Delhi.

The car in which the girl, hailing from New Delhi, was traveling alongwith her boyfriend, was intercepted by some youngsters (TV reports say there were five of them) carrying cricket bats.  These boys aged between 18 and 25 or so got into the car, drove away to a secluded place and gangraped the girl.

The girl has shown immense courage and has reported the incident to the police who have nabbed five of the offenders.

I saw the footage of the report on the television (Timesnow).  They showed the accused being taken by the police but the faces of all of them were covered in black clothes.  Why at all the police allow these people to cover themselves?

But, in our country, timeless times, we see the accused, if it is a politician, going away smiling in the police van, as if he is being given some security cover, and others going with the police fully covering their faces in black cloth or hand kerchief.

This I think should not be allowed.   When you commit a crime you should be exposed so that there is no other person who will attempt such crimes thinking of the ignonimity of public exposure.

Do you agree with me?

I’d imagine that the reason for allowing them to hide is that they are accused, not proven guilty. I think your idea of public shame is good, but should be for the guilty, not just the accused. Unfortunately by then the story is grown old and cold and doesn’t get the same media attention…

I also imagined so. But, when culprits are arrested based on legitimate complaint complaints like the one in the Noida rape case, they should be exposed.

Just watch what happens when Mr. Raju gets arrested. He will cover his face all the time as though his face is not known to anyone.
